Second interview over with. That was... interesting. It's not exactly a "bait and switch" kind of thing, but the extremely vague job description that I applied for doesn't really describe at all what the actual job was that I was interviewing for. I mean, I always expect a little bit of disconnect between "official job title and official job description" with "actual job duties/description", but the description on the job opening itself was so vague and...hand-wavy (oh you'll be interpreting guidelines and may prepare reports...).

The actual interview process was unusual, too. Part of that is because this employer does government work, so they have to make sure that everything matches up in case the applicant becomes accepted and they have to do a background check on them (woo, security clearances). So, you end up talking to HR first to verify information, and then you go into the actual interview. The interview was extremely informal and sort of off-putting. He only actually asked me a couple of questions - he was mainly concerned with describing the day-to-day work and stuff like that. I mean, I don't mind, but it was just odd compared to the last few job interviews I'd had.

So, anyway, I won't hear back from either of those places for a little while. And even if I do get an offer from this place, there's about a 3-6 week gap between the acceptance and the actual start-date because of the background checks and everything.

I got a call from another job I applied for and finished the phone screening. They want me to come in for an interview later, but they haven't set up the time/date. It's not, like, a dream job or anything, but it'd be income while I look for "the dream job". Y'know, if I get it.

I have that library job interview next week, too. And the part-time library thing closes next week, too, but I don't know when they intend to set up interviews. I know that they're needing help as soon as they can get it, since they're getting ready to have a bunch of people out.

I am seriously considering applying for jobs in Texas and Colorado. I don't especially want to move to either of those places, but that's where the jobs seem to be. It's not really the idea of moving that bothers me - I've considered jobs in Florida, North Carolina, and Maryland after all. It's more like... I don't want to move to those specific states. They're so far away from anyone I actually know - like family or friends - so if shit hits the fan, I don't have a safety net established there. I know people do this sort of thing all the time, but it has to be pretty nerve-wracking.

I grew up military, so I do have a case of wanderlust. I've lived in one place for the last, oh, ten years or so, and I've been getting some seriously itchy feet. But, all of my moves have been to places where there was an established military community, and I was usually with family or near family. If I moved to Texas or Colorado, I wouldn't have either family or a familiar subculture to lean on. It would just be me and the cat against the world, really. Well, mostly me because the cat would probably just nap and expect me to sort everything out.

Anyway, I've been updating/reviewing my Excel knowledge. I don't use half of the functions they've added, like pivot tables, but they do seem to be pretty neat. I hope I'll be able to work them into my regular usage soon. If nothing else, I can use the knowledge in any job interviews I get in the meantime.
